Hello CSAE Community!

My name is Alisha and I am the Manager of Association Relations for MCI Group, which provides strategic event consulting and professional conference organization for Canadian and International Meetings.

As a young professional myself, I currently contribute to CSAE by sitting on the Young Professionals Task Force. Alongside the CSAE team, we are identifying for ways to further engage young professionals throughout the year. In addition to this, I am looking forward to becoming more involved with other initiatives CSAE is embarking on this year.

In my personal life, I enjoy getting active (biking, hiking and running) and talking sustainability. Interested in connecting further for either of these? Please feel free to reach out!

Why did you initially join CSAE?
The definition of association is a group of people coming together for a joint purpose. How beautiful is that? From the experiences I’ve had so far, individuals working in the association space care about issues and are trying to make the world a better place. My previous work history is with non-profit organizations, so joining MCI Group and having the ability to work in this field with like-minded people was a natural transition.

I initially joined CSAE to meet more likeminded people. It has allowed me to be part of a network of resilient individuals who are passionate about what they do.

How do you overcome the challenges you face at work?
My motto is breath, think then act. Many times, a challenge comes up, and you initially want to react. This can often cause you to overreact or create frustration for others. Try to understand the “why”, and how you can deal with it effectively and respectfully.

What keeps you motivated?
People and their stories! When I see people doing amazing things, it inspires me to do more.

What’s one piece of advice?
Don’t get stuck in being comfortable. When you think you know something inside and out, try something new.

What’s one interesting thing about you?
When I’m not working, I enjoy getting outdoors and working towards a goal. Just recently, I completed my PADI scuba diving certification and am heading to Honduras next month to dive. I’m also training for a triathlon this summer. If anyone is in the GTA and interested in training, please feel free to reach out. Would love some CSAE training buddies.

Cats or dogs?

Recommend another CSAE aspiring leader to be featured.
Ahmad Zbib from Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA). He has been the Executive Director for the last year and believe he has much to provide to the CSAE community. Over to you, Ahmad!
